    January 8th: Layla & Other Assorted Love Songs, the double album debut by Eric Clapton’s latest bnad, Derek & The Dominoes, is released today. January 27th: David Bowie arrives in America to play his first dates there. February 6th: The Rollling Stones announce that their next UK tour will be the last before they go into exile in France for a year to avoid tax. February 7th: Guitarist Tom Fogerty quits Creedence Clearwater Revival.February 14th: A quartet called The Engaged Couples plays its first gig at the Festfolk Quartet nightclub in Gothenburg Sweden. Unhappy with their performance, they disband immediately. By the middle of 1972, they will be back together again under a new name – Abba. February 15th: The Who launch Pete Townshend’s new rock concept piece Lifehouse – but the project is a failure, the planned album scrapped, and the best of the songs will be reworked to appear on Who’s Next. February 17th: James Taylor makes his first major television appearance, singing ‘Fire And Rain’ on the Johnny Cash Show. February 20th: Youth’s protest in Athens, Greece, about the enforced shearing of long hair. March 5th: FM radio stations are instructed by the Federal Communications Commission that they must not broadcast songs perceived as encouraging drug use, including the like of ‘Puff The Magic Dragon’, ‘Lucy In The Sky With Diamonds’, or White Rabbit. March 16th: At the Grammy Awards Simon & Garfunkel collect six awards for Bridge Over Troubled Water. March 20th: Janis Joplin reaches Number One on the US singles chart with the posthumous release of ‘Me & Bobby McGee’. April 21st: The Rolling Stones release their new album Sticky Fingers the original cover of which, designed by Andy Warhol features an actual working zipper. April 2nd: David Bowie releases the album The Man Who Sold The World. The original cover features a reclining Bowie in drag, but this is considered too much for some markets, so a number of alternatives are supplied.May 12th: Mick Jagger marries Bianca Bianca Perez Morena de Macias in St. Tropez, France. Paul McCartney, Ringo Starr and Eric Clapton are among the guest. May 15th: After Pink Floyd have performed at the Crystal Palace Bowl Garden Party in south London, it emerges that many of the fish in the lake in front of the stage have died. The general consensus is that they’ve died from exposure to high noise levels, rather than from fear after catching sight of the 50 foot inflatable octopus the band have brought with them. May 31st: Thirty-one fans require treatment after their drinks are spiked with LSD at a Grateful Dead gig in Winerland, San Francisco.

June 6th: The last ever Ed Sullivan Show is broadcast on US TV, featuring Glady’s Knight & The Pips. July 3rd:At 27 Jim Morrison of the Doors dies of a heartattack in his bath in Paris, France. August 3rd: Paul McCartney announces the formation of a new band but will not choose a name until September, but apparently Turpentine is being seriously considered. August 13th: King Curtis is stabbed to death ouside his New York apartment.August 1st: The first of two concerts for Bangladesh begins at Madison Square Garden, New York City. The brain-child of ex-Beatle George Harrison, it brings together many of his buddies, Eric Clapton, Bob Dylan, Ringo Starr, Billy Preston, Leon Russell and Ravi Shankar. September:18th:Pink Floyd perform at the Classical Music Festival in Montreux Switzerland, the first rock band to do so. September 27th: Black Sabbath are awarded a US gold disc by the RIAA for their album Masters Of Reality. October 2nd: Rod Stewart’s album Every Picture Tells A Story dethrones Carole King’s Tapestry after 15 weeks at Number One on Billboard’s best-selling LP chart. Stewart will remain a member of the Faces until 1975. October 29th: Duane Allman of the Allman Brothers Band, who played slide guitar on ‘Layla’ dies in a motorcycle accident in Macon, Georgia. November 19th: B.B. King marks his 25th year in showbusiness by starting a European tour in London, UK. December 3rd: During a Frank Zappa concert at Montreux Casino in Switzerland, the venue burns down taking $50,000 worth of Zappa’s gear with it, inspiring Deep Purple to write their song Smoke On The Water. December 25th: Lou Reed arrives in London to start recording his first solo album with guitarist Steve Howe and player Rick Wakeman -both of whom have recently joined Yes.
